The Metro-ILA Fringe Benefit Fund wants to help you limit your out-of-pocket medical expenses. At the same time, we’d like you to become our partner to help better control the Fund’s portion of the medical expenses we pay on your behalf. That would help us limit the need to shift additional costs to you in the future.
We all know that just paying more for services doesn’t guarantee quality. But, spending wisely without compromising care is the key. Here are 5 ways we can work together to help control costs:
1. Avoid Using Out-of-Network Providers. Using doctors, hospitals, and facilities that participate in the Cigna network can save you a lot of money, because in most cases, your out of pocket cost is limited only to a co-pay. “In-Network” services apply to all health care services, including doctors and hospitals, outpatient testing, and treatment and surgery centers. To verify that a doctor or facility is in CIGNA’s network, check the Provider Directory on CIGNA.com or call the number on the back of your ID Card.
2. Consider Alternatives to the Emergency Room for Non-Emergency Conditions. Treatment for non-emergency conditions in an ER costs hundreds of dollars more than treatment at an Urgent Care Center or your doctor’s office. If you need care and not sure whether to go to the ER, call CIGNA’s 24 hour Nurse line at 1-800-CIGNA24 (1-800-244-6224).
3. Laboratory and Pathology Tests. Both Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp. participate in the Cigna network. Services at these labs can cost 70-75% less than other out of network labs. Discuss Quest and LabCorp with your doctor when you need lab services. You’ll limit your out of pocket expenses and help the Plan out at the same time.
4. Radiology Services (MRI or CT Scan) & Diagnostic Procedures (Colonoscopy, Endoscopy, or Arthrocopy). Whenever possible, consider using an independent radiology and/or diagnostic center instead of a hospital setting if you need to have an MRI, CT Scan, Colonoscopy, Endoscopy, or Arthroscopy. The costs can vary greatly. For help locating the most appropriate facility for these services call the customer service number on the back of your ID Card.
